| Postcards of the Seasons and Holidays by Tsutaya Kiichi | Well-known in Japan, Tsutaya Kiichi's illustrations were popularized in coloring books and paper doll books in the 1940s. Even Japanese American girls (of a certain age) would be familiar with the cute, sturdy-legged Japanese girls dressed in Western clothing through paper doll books that were available in local Japan towns.
After the war, Kiichi moved into graphic illustration for television and other media. At the age of 80, Kiichi revisited children as subject matter, but this time depicting and highlighting Japanese culture rather than Westernized images. This set of 7 postcards depicts kimonoed girls celebrating New Year's, Hinamatsuri, joys of summer, and other childish pursuits.
Kiichi's style has grown refined yet retains the nostalgic look of his earlier work. His work has been recognized in an exhibition curated by Takashi Murakami, a contemporary artist whose work has appeared in many renown contemporary museums around the world.
